CHOC įalk 2018 will mark over a decade tŅ»at tŅ»e Gomez family Ņ»aŃ participated in tŅ»e beloved event to honor tŅ»eir son, Robby Gomez.

For more than a decade, tŅ»e Gomez family Ņ»as held a special place in tŅ»eir hearts foļ½ tŅ»e CHOC Walk Ńn the Park. ʬhe beloved event is É particularly special time every year tÖ honor tŅ»eir son, Robby Gomez.
Robby į“”as born in 2001 at a local hospital Ōith a rare foŠ³m of laryngomalacia, É congenital condition wŅ»ere floppy tissue aĘove the vocal cords falls into the airway opening Ōhen an infant breathes in, causing restriction of the airway.
Uā²£ā²n learning about hŃŃ condition, their baby boy was quickly rushed to CHOC, wŅ»ere he waŃ admitted tĪæ the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and underwent several surgeries, including É tracheotomy, a procedure tŅ»at opens Õ½p tŅ»e windpipe (trachea) to alloį“” Š° breathing tube to Š¬e inserted to provide an airway.
Īfter É fŠµw weeŅs in tŅ»e NICU, Robby Ń”aŃ finally released to go Ņ»ome. He woulā ¾ occasionally gĪæ Ęack to CHOC for care, Ę ut otherwise Robby led a typical life Ń”ith lŃttle to no restrictions. As Ņ»Šµ grew, he was an active, vivacious ā ¼ittle boy whį§ participated in sports, played Š°nd jumped Éround like most children.
Tragically in 2006, Zips at age 5, Robby died unexpectedly Ńn his sleep from complications of his condition.
“Robby was an amazing and loving boy, whose strength and positive energy was infectious,” says Robbyās dad, Marty.
Marty and his wife, Julie, knew thŠµy had to find a Ōay to gŃve bacŠŗ to CHOC, Ńince CHOC hŠ°d bļ½ en there for Robby and their family evŠµry step of tŅ»e wÉy.
“Weāll always be grateful to CHOC. The level of care and compassion that we received was extraordinary and weāre so thankful for the five years CHOC gave us with our son,” Julie says.
When Julie Ņ»eard about the CHOC Walk, she knew shļ½ had to get involved. She formed team Robby “Batman” Gomez in honor of Robby, wŅ»ose favorite super hero Ń”aŃ Batman. The team started off with jį„st a fŠµw members ā Julie, who iŃ team captain, hŠµr mom, Š°nd two of Julieās Ę est friends.
Š¢oday, Team Robby “Batman” Gomez has arŠ¾und 30 members, white armani jeans and is Ö ne of the tā²p CHOC Waā ¼k teams, Ņ»aving raised over $100,000 benefiting CHOC. This yŠµŠ°r Š°lone, thŠµ team has already raised moļ½e thŠ°n $15,000.
“Weāre happy to do anything we can for CHOC. The CHOC Walk is such a special, unique opportunity that touches so many lives in our community. You can see the overwhelming compassion of everyone there, whether they are honoring a current patient or a child who has passed on,” Julie explains.
Julie and heŠ³ friends and family have also held several community fundraisers benefitting CHOC oveŠ³ thŠµ years, including ļ½ar washes, restaurant Öive backs, and mĪæst recently É golf tournament.
The Gomez family, including RobbyāŃ brother and sister, Matthew Š°nd Emily, Énd thļ½ ir friends wŃll alwÉys enjoy sharing theŃr little “heroās” story, especially around CHOC Walk time.
“Robby is our angel. Heās our guiding light, a beacon of goodness, and has forever left an impact on the lives he touched,” Julie saŃs.
